In 2014 after a lifelong love of boating, Chris Grant owner and driver of the C.J.Grant offshore race team purchased his first high performance boat, a 42’ Fountain Lightning. In November of that year, we travelled to Key West for the offshore world championships. That was it! He was hooked. He wanted to race. Fast forward a few years and in 2018 the opportunity came along to purchase a used 42’ MTI Supercat race boat. After a few frantic months of hard work getting the boat race ready we were all set for our first race. In May of 2019 we travelled to Cocoa Beach for our first Supercat race. On the Saturday before the Sunday race, we suddenly found ourselves without a throttleman as our intended throttleman had to pull out. A couple of phone calls later and we were able to bring in world class throttleman Billy Moore. It turned out to be a great move as Billy has become a very important and knowledgeable member of our team. We competed in 6 races plus the Key West World Championships and Englewood Championships in 2019. We were busy making changes to the boat for the 2020 season when Covid hit. We were devastated that we would not be racing at all in 2020.
We have been busy over the past year making changes to both the boat and engines to help make our team more competitive. While our boat stays down in Fort Myers Florida year round, most of our team members are Canadian and because our border with the United States has been closed for more than a year and with no date as to when it might reopen, we are unsure as to when we will be back racing. We are optimistic that we will be back by September at the latest.
