Eyes on Key West and Thoughts on 2022

P1 has an exclusive TV filming and distribution rights agreement in place with the APBA, together with a ten-year, worldwide deal with the UIM for Class 1 offshore racing covering all commercial rights. We are committed to growing the sport and fanbase of offshore powerboat racing using our global television distribution, content production and creation. Quality content creation is an essential building block for any successful motorsport and I believe that TV has a hand in creating the future of the sports it shows.
Azam Rangonnwala
CEO, Powerboat P1

The waiting is over for what many describe as the Super Bowl of offshore powerboat racing. All roads lead to Key West this week for the 40th annual UIM-RWO World Championships with more boats expected for the week-long event than over the past 12 years.

Last year’s championships were a victim of the pandemic but that has only served to heighten the anticipation and excitement amongst the race teams and fans. With UK citizens able to travel to the United States from today, P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala took no time in booking a flight and will arrive in Key West tomorrow to meet with the powerboat racing community and oversee five days of race filming for domestic and international television broadcasts. “P1 has an exclusive TV filming and distribution rights agreement in place with the APBA, together with a ten-year, worldwide deal with the UIM for Class 1 offshore racing covering all commercial rights,” explained Rangoonwala from his London headquarters last week. “We are committed to growing the sport and fanbase of offshore powerboat racing using our global television distribution, content production and creation. Quality content creation is an essential building block for any successful motorsport and I believe that TV has a hand in creating the future of the sports it shows.

Powerboat P1 has a long-standing and close relationship with TV production and distribution company Greenlight Television whose aim is to showcase the sport and secure new broadcast deals in key territories. In April this year, P1 announced that it had renewed its agreement with Bally Sports to provide national coverage on its family of regional sports networks and CBS Sports Network also screens offshore race action. The potential reach of the worldwide broadcast deals in place is more than 230 million homes, with Greenlight producing a one-hour television program from each round of the APBA national championships. Television coverage of last month’s Fort Myers race event will be broadcast this Sunday (November 10) and the Key West action is scheduled for the end of the year, with RWO live streaming the racing on its Facebook page and website.

My passion for Class 1 racing is as strong as ever and I am delighted to have the opportunity to help take it back to the top where it belongs.

Huski Team, Throttleman

The Huski Team will attract significant attention this week following its announcement last month that not only will it be racing in Key West but also plans to compete in Class 1 next year at APBA events. The owners of the Huski Chocolate and Huski Wear brands are expanding their powerboat team, which currently includes a 540 MTI catamaran, by acquiring the multiple world championship-winning Class 1 boat from AMF Racing in Florida that was formerly sponsored by GEICO. The team’s 47-foot catamaran, with its Mercury Racing 1100 Competition engines, is in the hands of crew chief Gary Stray and multi-time world champion Steve Curtis who said: “My passion for Class 1 racing is as strong as ever and I am delighted to have the opportunity to help take it back to the top where it belongs.” Rangoonwala added: “The decision by the Huski team to enter Class 1 in 2022 is superb news in respect of our aim to grow the class in the United States and at the same time develop plans to globalise the series over the coming years. We want to return Class 1 to the summit of offshore racing by attracting more teams and building a worldwide television audience and we have been further buoyed by the recent news that the 222 Offshore Australia team, which finished second in 2019, plans to return to competition in the United States next year.”

Making its first appearance in Key West will be the CMR-branded boat in the very capable hands of the experienced Shaun Torrente Racing team. Powerboat P1 announced last month that the title sponsorship this season by the country’s tenth-largest roofing company, which saw CMR become a series partner for the APBA offshore racing series, will continue in 2022. Also in Key West will be 30-year veteran racer Nigel Hook with his 52-foot Mystic C5000 catamaran which may well compete in Class 1 next year.
