Lilly and Curtis win in Key West

Newly-crowned UIM Class 1 champions Huski Chocolate took the honours yesterday (Friday) in what was the opening round of the Key West Class 1 Championship after Wednesday’s racing was cancelled for safety reasons as Storm Nicole approached the Florida Peninsula. It was a day of double celebrations for the Huski Racing team with the Huski Wear boat #22 finishing in second place.

A fleet of six Class 1 boats lined up on the start line with the XINSURANCE 45-foot MTI catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 1100 engines in pole position. Throttleman Alex Pratt said: “I’m really looking forward to racing in Key West this year. I’ve been dreaming about racing here ever since I came down in a poker run boat several years ago. This is going to be an exciting week and our team is doing everything we can to be as prepared as we can be. As you know, we have some great people behind the team who are going to put Miles (Jennings) and I in the best position possible to do well out there.”

With a moderate sea and light winds, the Class 1 boats faced ten laps on a 4.48 mile course and Huski Chocolate, with Steve Curtis and Brit Lilly in the cockpit, took an early lead followed by XINSURANXE/Good Boy Vodka and Huski Wear. At turn 3 on the opening lap Huski Wear moved into second place in a battle with XINSURANCE. Huski Chocolate then extended its lead and Huski Wear pulled away from XINSURANCE.

On lap 8, Rich Wyatt and Marc Granet in the dfYOUNG Mystic catamaran, who finished second and fourth in their two UIM Class 1 appearances this season, made a move to take third place but were forced wide by Miles Jennings and incurred a time penalty. Then on the final lap they blew an engine but finished fourth. New York-based Team Defalco took fifth place in their first Class 1 race ahead of JBS Racing.

Thousands of fans will be in the southern-most city of the United States tomorrow (Sunday) for the final Class 1 race.
