Anticipation continues to build ahead of this weekend’s Sarasota Grand Prix, round 2 of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship, with added interest focussing in on the welcome return to frontline action of XINSURANCE/Good Boy Vodka.
After sitting-out the season-opener and gifting their rivals an immediate points advantage, Alex Pratt and Miles Jennings know they must try to maximise efforts and score heavily in their first competitive outing in their recently acquired championship-winning MTI to get back into the title hunt.
Fresh from a shakedown test this week, driver Jennings is cautiously optimistic. “We know the pedigree of this boat and yes, we have had limited time on the water to dial it in, but the test was solid, and we know we can build on what we have. Realistically, a podium would be a great result, but we are not getting ahead of ourselves just yet.”

Defending champion and current point’s leader Steve Curtis is looking to make it two wins from two alongside Brit Lilly in Huski Ice Spritz and is optimistic following a recent test session. ‘We’ve had a day’s testing and tried out a new set of props which we really liked, but the thing is this is such a strong boat, the whole package is good, so as long as we don’t mess up on our set-up we have a good chance,” he said. “But testing is one thing, and you never know until you get out on the course and assess the conditions.
“It’s going to be hot, and they always say Sarasota is always flat. But where we race out in the Gulf it is relatively shallow and you always get these rollers coming in and mixing it up a bit. I think we can expect speeds upwards of 130mph, but you can always get caught out if you are hanging it out and running it loose and suddenly there’s a bit of unexpected sea in front of you.”
The additional incentive for the Huski duo is to ensure the bragging rights over Potholes Heroes Johnny Tomlinson, who for this race weekend is joined in the cockpit by Travis Pastrana - who shared the driving seat last season with good friend Lilly beside Curtis last season on their way to the title.

Class 1 Teams Guide
The absence of Defalco on the grid, who are missing this weekend's race because they are re-rigging some components on the boat and servicing mechanical issues, means six will line-up in Sarasota.
Looking to get back to the front are 222 Australia’s Daryl Nicholson and Giovanni Carpitella after engine issues cost them the win in Cocoa Beach. “Mercury has fixed the engine and we think we now know the ‘why’. Muddy [crew chief Peter McGrath] has had the boat out and is happy for now so let’s see how we get on. We know we have the pace and performance, but we just need to get her across the line at full tilt.”
Monster Energy/M.CON Racing and dfYOUNG are chasing their first points haul of the season after both had issues in the opener. The Monster Energy/M.CON crew of Tyler Miller and Myrick Coil know they have a pacy boat underneath them and have taken all precautions to ensure a trouble-free weekend to realise the boats full potential. “We’ve put in a lot of time over the last three weeks to make sure we get her across the line. We have tested trying different props, set-ups so we feel we are ready.”
Teams will get their first opportunity to get out on the 10-pin six- mile course and test the waters in Saturday morning’s practice session which is followed by a one-hour official qualifying session at 2pm [local time], with the 10-lap 60-mile UIM Class 1 Sarasota Grand Prix starting at 1pm [local time] on Sunday.
Saturday’s Qualifying and Sunday’s Grand Prix will be streamed live on the P1 Offshore web site
