Dramatic Super Stock race marks Powerboat P1’s racing milestone

Powerboat P1 could never have imagined that the 700th race in their 20-year history would be such a dramatic affair. Celebrating this significant milestone in Saturday’s final race in Sarasota, 11 boats in the Super Stock class took to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico for the 48-mile race, with winds picking up and white caps appearing.

The 32-foot Victory catamaran, Jackhammer, took the early lead chased by a pack of boats including CMR with driver Sean Conner and John Tomlinson onboard. Tomlinson was subbing for owner Shaun Torrente on throttles. Performance Boat Center and Northwing Offshore were also in the mix and it didn’t take long for things to heat up. The 32-foot Doug Wright, LPC, with owner/throttleman Loren Peters and driver Anthony Smith, were moving up through the fleet when it rolled on the opening lap. The crew were unhurt and the race was halted.

That wasn’t all. In that first lap, three other boats were unable to re-join the race. On the restart, Jackhammer jumped into the lead with CMR, Performance Boat Center and Big East Construction giving chase. There was then more drama as Jackhammer pulled up with a guardian mode issue which shut down the 300hp engine, leaving CMR and Performance Boat Center to battle for the lead. Unfortunately, the exciting battle came to an end when Performance Boat Center pulled off with mechanical issues. Tomlinson and Conner took the checkered flag ahead of Pete and A.J. Bogino in the 32-foot Doug Wright, CoCo’s Monkey, and Jackhammer which kept running.

After the race, Powerboat P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala presented the CMR duo with special glass trophies. “Two decades of P1 Offshore and AquaX racing has seen us stage races in almost twenty countries on four continents and today’s Super Stock battle was a dramatic way to celebrate our 700th race,” said Azam.

The very first Powerboat P1 race was in Italy in 2003 and plans for its 20th anniversary celebrations in St. Petersburg in early September will be announced later this month.
