The unpredictable chop of Lake Michigan was rolling more aggressively on the last day of the Mercury Racing MidWest Challenge at Sheboygan, WI.
As soon as the green flag was hoisted to start the Factory Stock 450R race, it hinted at a repeat of Saturday, as yesterday's winner, Waves and Wheels #96, made an aggressive charge to the first buoy. Piloted by 18-year-old Logan Adan and with the wise head and hands of Ricky Maldonado on throttles, they had completed a flawless race giving Logan his first victory in powerboat racing.
The previous day's calmer conditions had seemed to favour the Doug Wright boats. Today's rougher weather, however, appeared to offer payback to the MTIs.
96 Waves & Wheels took a wave badly and, in a massive jump, landed directly in front of the #7 boat TS Motorsports driven by Taylor Scism and Johnny Tomlinson. The resulting drop in speed let MFR / Mead Family Racing #5 through, followed by #36 Gladiator Canados, crewed by Ervin Grant and Michel Karsenti.
MFR took the lead, driven by another teenager, the even younger 16-year-old Caleb Mead, mentored by world-renowned throttleman Shaun Torrente. The pair would go on to dominate the entire race in their MTI over a demanding course.
By lap three, Gladiator Canados was pushing MFR hard, with TS Motorsports attempting to cut through behind. Willy Cabeza and Gary Ballough in #32 GC Racing were deck-to-deck with #96 Waves & Wheels, swapping the fourth and fifth place in turns.
MFR's lead was challenged seriously in lap four when the Doug Wright of Gladiator Canados briefly broke through. The Doug Wright seemed to drop off the pace and fall back, giving TS Motorsports the chance to slip into second place.
There was a brief resurgence from Wave & Wheels, who briefly snatched second from TS Motorsports before falling off the power and dropping back into fourth.
In the final lap, a confident MFR sped past the checkered flag, followed by TS Motorsports in second and GC Racing in third.
