Non-endemic sponsors like Monster Energy, who joined us this year, are coming in because it’s a cool, dynamic, entertaining sport and that’s what their brand stands for. We are seeing professionalism grow in our portfolio of brands, and I think the reason for us being successful is that we are helping the competitors, race teams and the sport as a whole become more professional. Our research shows that it is the big boats in the Class 1 series that drive our digital traffic. Today, content is king and we have twenty years of it. The reach of our worldwide broadcast deals has climbed to more than 200 million homes in over 100 countries.

It all began in an Italian resort town on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It was May 2003 and the very first Powerboat P1 Grand Prix of the Sea launched a new era of marine motorsport. Since then, P1 has staged more than 700 powerboat and jet ski races in 19 countries on 4 continents, and who knows when and where the 1,000th race will take place.
The two decades of high-speed, sporting action has been very much a father and son story. Azam explained: “My father, Asif had a vision, which is sometimes described as the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom, and it was underpinned by passion and energy to build a successful and enduring business in pursuit of a market opportunity. The next twenty years are now in my hands!”
Azam Rangoonwala, Powerboat P1 CEO
Esposito described how Azam came into a leadership position in the organization ten years ago after being involved in most areas of the business – driving a boat in race events, helping to build the boats at Fountain Powerboats in North Carolina, scoring, refereeing, event management and negotiating with host venues – and asked him what attracts sponsors and partners. “Non-endemic sponsors like Monster Energy, who joined us this year, are coming in because it’s a cool, dynamic, entertaining sport and that’s what their brand stands for. We are seeing professionalism grow in our portfolio of brands, and I think the reason for us being successful is that we are helping the competitors, race teams and the sport as a whole become more professional.”
P1 has transitioned from building grassroots competition in the early years to a top-down model, with Class 1 powerboats and Pro AquaX jet ski racing generating a wider fanbase and partnerships. “Our research shows that it is the big boats in the Class 1 series that drive our digital traffic,” commented Azam. “Today, content is king and we have twenty years of it. The reach of our worldwide broadcast deals has climbed to more than 200 million homes in over 100 countries.”
Azam told Esposito that growth will come through improving the fan experience, including VIP hospitality, and adding international race venues. He highlighted that globalization is key to growing the top-tier classes in both existing racing markets and new ones, and it will deliver bigger partnership opportunities. “The Middle East is hot right now and we hope that you will see some P1 race events in the region within the next two years,” added Azam.
