We were thrilled to welcome back the Powerboat Grand Prix which draws enthusiastic crowds from both near and far, capturing the attention of residents and visitors alike. Beyond the thrill and excitement of the event, it plays a vital role in driving economic growth in our region by generating a significant surge in tourism and spending within the community.

P1’s close-to-shore race courses provide a challenging racing experience and the high-speed, free-to-watch action produces outstanding drama and entertainment for the live, television and online audiences. Events are designed to encourage tourism and enhance the profile of the host venue. The power of sports tourism and destination marketing is harnessed to drive awareness, visitor numbers and event revenues. Perhaps the biggest impact destination marketing has on tourism is that it can significantly boost the local and regional economy.

Sports events provide a strong and attractive stage for national and international promotion, and P1’s domestic and worldwide TV broadcast deals showcase the race venues and commercial partners through highlights shows on Bally Sports Regional Sports Networks and CBS Sports Network as well as in more than 100 countries.

Here are what some of the race venues reported after hosting events this season:

  • The XINSURANCE Great Lakes Grand Prix in early August saw offshore racing return to the southern shores of Lake Michigan for the 14th year, attracting an estimated attendance of 70,000 and a providing a boost to the local economy of more than $12 million.
  • The City of Sheboygan in Wisconsin hosted the Mercury Racing Midwest Challenge in mid-August and the Sheboygan Area Tourism Zone reported an economic impact of $4.7 million with around 43,000 people attending the three-day festival. Ryan Sorenson, the City’s Mayor, said: “We were excited to host this event and bring powerboat racing back to our city. We love showing off our pristine shoreline and our number one natural resource, Lake Michigan.”
  • The final event of the UIM Class 1 season on Labor Day weekend saw the series head to St. Petersburg on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Brian Lowack, Interim President & CEO for Visit St. Pete/Clearwater commented: “We were thrilled to welcome back the Powerboat Grand Prix which draws enthusiastic crowds from both near and far, capturing the attention of residents and visitors alike. Beyond the thrill and excitement of the event, it plays a vital role in driving economic growth in our region by generating a significant surge in tourism and spending within the community. VSPC’s Public Relation Director, Jason Latimer added: “The high-speed racing set against the background of the St. Pete Pier and city skyline provides an incredible experience for our residents and visitors.”
